The Daily Herald is the third largest-circulation newspaper in Illinois, and the largest focused on the heavily-Republican suburbs. Its motto is "To fear God, tell the truth and make money". Apparently it's given up the first two in pursuit of the third.
On Sept. 18, the Herald ran a wingnut letter to the editor placing blame on President Obama for Bush's budget deficits, claiming:
[N]o president can create deficits.
All spending bills originate in the House of Representatives and are voted on by Congress. Obama was in the House when all the big spending bills were passed and he voted for all to them. [sic]
Of course, President Obama was elected to the Senate in 2004, and never served in the House. But that's not important, according to the Daily Herald's editors.
When newspapers abdicate their responsibility to check basic and easily verifiable facts, they demonstrate that they're no longer interested in journalism or the truth. Readers should be outraged that a supposedly respected publication is printing crap disguised as news.
